University leaders are no strangers to changing trends and demands. But, as our 13th survey of vice-chancellors at universities across England, Scotland, and Wales shows, today’s challenges are more pressing than ever.
The results are stark – 100 percent of vice-chancellors say the sector has never faced greater threats. They also accept that the power lies in their hands, individually and collectively, to bring about the reforms that will help the sector thrive into the future.
Our research explores how universities are responding to unprecedented change across three key areas:
- Student recruitment and income generation
Vice-chancellors are much more conservative in their growth plans but are hopeful about non-traditional sources of revenue
- Enhanced organisational capabilities
A ‘new realism’ is spurring universities to adapt their operating models to be leaner, more focused, and more resilient
- Adapting and developing market opportunities
Leaner, more resilient organisational capabilities will improve institutional abilities to pursue outward-facing reforms in their educational and knowledge services.
