A smarter approach to smart meters

In 2013, the UK government launched the Smart Meter Implementation Programme (SMIP) to provide consumers with near-real time information to manage their energy use, save money, and reduce carbon emissions. Overseen by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), and with the deployment of smart meters being led by energy suppliers, SMIP will transition residential and small and micro-business premises to have smart meters, replacing traditional gas and electricity meters.

Commissioned by Smart Meter Assets, our latest report examines the issue of the large number of non-faulty smart meters being removed and replaced. Based on our research and interviews with key industry stakeholders (including energy suppliers, Meter Asset Providers (MAPs), and Meter Equipment Managers (MEMs)), the report examines the following:

• Defining the issue associated with the removal of non-faulty smart meter
• Estimating the size and scale of the issue across the retail energy market
• Describing the impact on customers and organisations
• Examining the causes and suggesting solutions
